Reset the timer?

Kitchen timers

Eggs, pasta and everything else with a number on the packet. Pick one and it counts down, then rings loud enough to hear from the next room.

Why a timer in a tab

The timer on the oven counts the oven, and the one on your phone is in the other room by the time it goes off. A tab on the screen you already have open in the kitchen is neither – it is big enough to read from the other side of the worktop and loud enough to hear over an extractor fan.

It keeps time by the clock rather than by counting frames, so it stays right if you switch tabs to look up the next step, and it rings from a background tab. After your first visit it works with no connection at all, which a kitchen wifi appreciates.

Every one of them has a table

None of the cards above is just a countdown with a different number on it. Six minutes and eleven minutes are different eggs, a penne is not a spaghetti, and rice has a water ratio before it has a time at all – so each page carries the times laid out with the conditions they assume, because a number without its conditions is only true by accident.

That is also why the list grows slowly. A timer gets a page here when there is something to learn on it, and not before.

Two at once

Open the timer in a second tab and it runs its own countdown, so the eggs and the toast can be on different clocks. Each tab keeps its own time even if you reload one of them.

Every page keeps its own time, so the rice can be resting in one tab while the eggs run in another. Bookmark the one you reach for every morning and it is two clicks from cold.

Questions about the online timer

Will the timer go off if I switch tabs?

Yes. The alarm is booked on the audio clock the moment you press start, so it sounds at the right second whether or not the tab is in front. If you allow notifications it will also raise one, which is the reliable way to be told while you are reading a recipe in another tab.

Can I run more than one kitchen timer at a time?

Open the timer in a second tab. Each tab runs its own countdown and remembers it separately, so one can be on the eggs and another on the rice without them treading on each other.

Does it work without an internet connection?

After your first visit, yes. The page and the alarm sounds are stored in the browser, so a kitchen with no signal still gets a working timer.

Is it loud enough to hear from another room?

It depends on your speakers, but the alarm repeats rather than sounding once, and it keeps going until you come back to the page. The volume control on the timer has three steps, and the mechanical ring carries furthest over a noisy kitchen.

How long do you boil an egg?

Six minutes for a runny yolk, eight for jammy and eleven for hard boiled, for a large egg straight from the fridge. The egg timer has the full table, minute by minute, with a photograph of the yolk at each one.
