How long to cook chicken breast in the air fryer
A medium chicken breast takes about 18 minutes at 190 °C, then 5 minutes to rest. Pick what you have and how big it is: the timer tells you when to turn it and when to take it out.

How to air fry chicken breast in three steps
-
Oil and season it
Pat the breast dry, rub it with a teaspoon of oil and season both sides. If one end is much thicker than the other, press it flatter with the heel of your hand or a rolling pin, so the thin end is not dry by the time the thick end is done.
-
Into a preheated basket, not touching
Preheat the air fryer to 190 °C (375 °F) and lay the breasts in with space between them. Start the timer, and turn them over when it says turn. Two breasts cook in the same time as one, as long as neither touches the other.
-
Check for 74 °C, then rest it
Push a thermometer into the thickest part: it is done at 74 °C (165 °F). Take it out when the timer says so and leave it on a board for five minutes before cutting, so the juice stays in the meat instead of running out of it.
Air fryer chicken breast times and temperatures
For boneless, skinless chicken breast in a basket air fryer of 4 to 6 litres, preheated, turned halfway. A medium breast is about 225 g. The rest is off the heat and not included in the times.
-
Not yet
Pink, glossy and see-through in the middle. Back in.
-
Just right
White all the way through and still wet with juice.

The times are a guide and the thermometer is the answer: chicken breast is done when the thickest part reads 74 °C (165 °F). It climbs another degree or two while it rests, which is fine. Taking it out earlier and counting on the rest to finish it is not.
Frozen breaded products come in two kinds, and the packet says which: fully cooked, which only needs heating and crisping and follows the row above, or raw, which needs the packet’s own time and a thermometer. Raw stuffed ones, like a chicken Kiev, should not go in the air fryer at all.
Food safety
What the official guidance says
- Chicken breast
-
Safe at 74 °C (165 °F) in the thickest part, checked with a food thermometer.
- Stuffed breaded chicken
-
Raw, stuffed, breaded chicken products should not be cooked in an air fryer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions instead.
- Don’t overfill the basket
-
Crowding stops the air circulating and can leave chicken undercooked. Cook several breasts in batches.
- Leftovers
-
Into the fridge within 2 hours of cooking.

Why chicken breast goes dry
A breast is lean, and it is thick at one end and thin at the other. By the time the middle of the thick end reaches 74 °C, the thin end has been past it for minutes. Flattening it to an even thickness before cooking is the single biggest fix.
The second is the rest. Five minutes on a board lets the juice settle back into the meat. Cut it straight away and the juice ends up on the board, which is why the timer counts the rest too.
Brine it, if you have half an hour
A quick brine makes a noticeable difference: a tablespoon of salt dissolved in 500 ml of cold water, the breasts in it in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour. Rinse, pat completely dry, then oil and season as usual, with less salt.
Even without a brine, salting the breast 30 minutes before cooking and leaving it uncovered in the fridge helps it stay juicy and brown better.
Breaded, tenders and fingers
For homemade breaded chicken, spray or brush the crumb lightly with oil before cooking. Dry breadcrumbs in hot air stay pale and powdery without it. Tenders, strips and chicken fingers are the same method, at 200 °C and for about half the time.
Frozen breaded chicken is often already cooked, but not always. Check the packet, and never air fry raw stuffed products such as chicken Kiev or cordon bleu, which is the USDA’s advice.

Questions about chicken breast in the air fryer
How long do you cook chicken breast in the air fryer?
18 to 20 minutes at 190 °C (375 °F) for a medium breast of about 225 g, turned halfway, then 5 minutes resting. A small breast takes 13 to 15 minutes and a large one 22 to 25. Check that the thickest part reaches 74 °C (165 °F).
What temperature do you air fry chicken breast at?
190 °C (375 °F) for a whole breast: hot enough to brown the outside, gentle enough that the middle cooks before the surface dries. Thin, butterflied breasts, tenders and breaded pieces do better at 200 °C (400 °F), because they are done before a lower heat can crisp them.
How long does frozen chicken breast take in the air fryer?
25 to 30 minutes at 190 °C (375 °F) for a raw frozen breast, straight from the freezer, turned halfway. Season it after the first 10 minutes, once the surface has thawed enough for the seasoning to stick. Always check the middle with a thermometer, since frozen breasts vary more in size than fresh.
How long do breaded chicken breasts take in the air fryer?
Homemade breaded breasts take 16 to 18 minutes at 190 °C (375 °F), with a light spray of oil on the crumb. Frozen breaded fillets that are already cooked need 12 to 15 minutes at 200 °C (400 °F). If the packet says raw, follow its own instructions.
How long do chicken tenders take in the air fryer?
Fresh chicken tenders or strips take 8 to 10 minutes at 200 °C (400 °F), and frozen breaded tenders, or chicken fingers, 10 to 12. Shake the basket halfway. They are small enough to be done fast, so check one at the low end of the time.
How do you keep chicken breast juicy in the air fryer?
Flatten it to an even thickness, cook it at 190 °C rather than hotter, take it out as soon as the thickest part reaches 74 °C, and let it rest for five minutes before cutting. A 30-minute brine in salted water makes it juicier still.
Do you flip chicken breast in the air fryer?
Yes, once, halfway through. The side facing the fan browns faster than the side against the basket, and one turn evens it out. The timer rings at the turn.
Can you cook a chicken Kiev or stuffed chicken breast in the air fryer?
Not if it is a raw, stuffed, breaded product from the shop. The USDA advises against cooking those in an air fryer and says to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, because the filling makes it hard to be sure the chicken inside is cooked through.
How do you reheat chicken breast in the air fryer?
5 to 7 minutes at 180 °C (350 °F), turned once, until it is steaming hot all the way through. Sliced chicken reheats in 3 to 4 minutes. Only reheat chicken that went into the fridge within two hours of cooking.
